The adaptive bidirectional equalization process of the present invention first determines the point of lowest signal quality for the time slot being processed. Detection is then performed on the time slot in both directions until the processing meets at the point of lowest signal quality. This process reduces the bit error rate as compared to performing standard equalization on the time slot.
