ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a method for the annealing of iron powder which has been generated by compressed-gas atomization or pressurized-water atomization of an iron melt. Particles of such iron powder are surrounded by an iron oxide film. The iron metal powder particles are reduced in a reducing atmos- phere at a temperature from 900 to 1200°C. A reducing atmosphere is maintained by continuous feeding of hydrogen in the atmosphere containing water vapor. The known annealing method for iron powder is improved by reducing the use of hydrogen as a pure gas and gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon compound are added during the annealing process in an amount which is below the amount at which soot formation commences. A preferred hydrocarbon composition is natural gas.
