Abstract of the Disclosure A method of shaping and applying a backing material to a closed-cell, expanded thermoplastic blank which comprises heating the blank until the surface thereof melts and its core zone is plastically mouldable, placing the blank and the backing material in n hollow mould, closing the mould whereby the backing material and the blank are pressed together so that tbe backing material is bonded to the surface of the blank and the blank and backlng assume the shape of the internal wall of the mould. The method of the present invention is particularly applicable to the production of soles of shoes. The method is relatively simple to automate, since very brief station times, of the order of 5 seconds are required. The method allows a quick change ln a manufacturing program while not in any way sacrificing a high rate of output.
