Described is an assay for measuring the activity of WbpM and its homologues such as FlaA1. The assay, in one embodiment which is described is a spectrophotometric assay which relies relies on differential colorimetric yields of reaction between N-acetyl hexosamines and p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DMAB). Also described is a spectrophotometric assay for detecting inhibitors of WbpM and its homologues.. Further, a method of producing UDPGalNAc from UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDPGlcNAc) which is less costly is described, the method comprises incubating an epimerase in the presence of UDPGlcNAc under conditions sufficient for the production of UDPGalNAc.
