ABSTRACT A method and apparatus for classifying solid particles suspended in a liquid dispersion into discrete fractions which involves injecting the liquid dispersion containing the solid particles laterally into a settling basin with a sufficient velocity to cause particles of differing settling characteristics to settle in different portions along the floor of the basin, applying a reduced pressure separately and in sequence to particles settled in the various zones to withdraw the same from the basin, and withdrawing a supernatant liquid effluent from the basin.
