ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved method of bleaching cellulosic material with an oxidizing gas in an alkaline environment in which a pulp suspension is treated with an alkali solution at an elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of an oxidizing gas to effect removal of lignin wherein the improvement comprises transforming the pulp suspension into a stable foam in the presence of a foaming agent.
