Abstract A method for bringing a hydrogen sulphide-burning plant into stand- by position by discontinuing the hydrogen sulphide supply and supplying a fuel, an oxygen-containing gas and water to the plant and burning the fuel with the aid of the oxygen-containing gas. The method is characterized in that the water is introduced into the flame formed by the combustion of the fuel with the aid of the oxygen-containing gas. This method, which enables the plant to be maintained at the desired temperature while avoiding the formation of corrosive substances, may be carried out using a burner compri- sing a gun, an air register and a combustion chamber in which the gun compri- ses a supply tube for water or steam with an inlet therefor, a supply tube for hydrogen sulphide with an inlet therefor, and a supply tube for a fuel with an inlet therefor.
