Abstract of the Invention A method for purifying combustion exhaust gases provides for conducting the combustion operation, e.g., running a natural gas-fueled internal combustion engine, sufficiently rich of the stoichiometric air-to-fuel ratio to provide reducing values (carbon monoxide and hydrogen) in at least the stoichiometric quantity needed to reduce nitrogen oxides. The exhaust gas is contacted with a platinum group metal (platinum and rhodium) catalyst to effectuate reduction of NOx formed in the combustion or otherwise contained in the exhaust gas, to nitrogen and oxida- tion of carbon monoxide.
