ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Crude gas obtained through partial oxidation of solid and/or liquid carbon-containing material at temperatures between 1000 and 2000°C are catalytically treated by introduction of the gas, freed of its dust-like contaminants and cooled to a temperature between 70 and 250°C, at a pressure between 1 and 100 bar and a space velocity between 3000 and 30,000 Nm3 gas per m3 catalyst per hour, before further gas treatment, across a catalyst containing 2-65% by weight of iron as active component, in sulfide form. The iron in the feed material for the catalyst, initially in the form of oxide or hydroxide, is converted into sulfide form by reaction with the H2S contained in the crude gas or by special treatment with a gas containing H2S, CS2 and/or mercaptan. Preferred catalyst feed materials include a mixture of iron and chromium oxides with an Fe:Cr ratio by weight of between 5:1 and 15:1, and a Fe-III- hydroxide-containing gas purification mass. :; ,
