A B S T R A C T In this method for chemically separating gaseous mixtures of iso- topes by reaction of one with a partner compound, the molecules of the isotope to be separated are excited by narrow-band light sources, e.g., lasers, and the additional energy required to make a chemical reaction with the excited molecules possible is supplied to the reaction partner. When the mixture includes 238 UF6 and 235 UF6, a CO laser is used for exciting the isotop 235 UF6 with laser lines of the wavelengths ? = 5.415 µm, and preferably, ? = 5.0304 µm as well as ? = 5.308 µm; and for exciting the 238 UF6 isotope, laser lines of the wavelengths ? = 5.389 µm and ? = 5.400 µm are used.
