The invention relates to a method for cleaving cervimycin monoesters. The object of the invention, of converting in a simple manner the cervimycin esters which are less active but are formed in larger quantity into the highly active cervimycin K which occurs as a minor component in the preparation by fermentation, is achieved by preparing unesterified cervimycins from cervimycin esters with di- or monomethylated malonic acids, where at least one esterolytic enzyme acts on the cervimycin malonic esters at temperatures from 20~C to 75~C, preferably from 40 to 76~C, at a pH of pH 5.0 to 10.0, preferably pH 6.0 to 9.0, for a time of from 0.1 h to 48 hours.
