ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is provided for producing a feed slurry containing about 30% to about 40% coal for pumping to a high pressure preheating zone of a coal liquefaction process. Coal having a particle size distribution such that at least 80% passes through a 100 mesh screen and at least 40% passes through a 325 mesh screen is mixed with a slurry recycled from the liquefaction process in a mixing zone at a temperature of from about 350°F to about 450°F for not more than fifteen minutes.
