ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Particles of elemental mercury are separated from an aqueous medium by subjecting the medium to a magnetic field having a strength of at least 6,000 gauses to cause coalescence of the elemental mercury into drops of mercury that can be separated from the medium by mechanical means and thereafter mechanically separating from the medium the drops of elemental mercury. The invention is particularly useful in treating industrial sewage waters containing mercury compounds.
