ABSTRACT A modified metallurgical converter wherein removable segments or portions are provided in the anticipated areas of highest wear of its refractory lining, and methods for repair- ing same. The removable segments, which preferably include openings to which tuyeres may be attached, are not attached to the refractory lining and allow its repair when removed. Also, a method for improving the service and operational life of such metallurgical converters.
