ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of inhibiting the dissolution of the gravel pack and/or the erosion of silicate- or carbonate- containing formations subjected to steam-enhanced oil recovery processes. The method includes the addition of a compound, such as salt, having a volatile cationic compo- nent and an inert anionic component to the steam feed water to reduce the pH of the residual liquid phase and increase the pH of the vapor phase of the injected steam. Preferred salts are ammonium salts, such as ammonium sulfate and ammonium chloride.
