CONTROLLED THERMOFORMING Abstract of the Disclosure It is known to injection mould or blow mould mat- erials such as polyesters. However, such procedures are cumbersome, time consuming, and are relatively expensive. There is a need to increase the rate of moulding from such material by thermoforming while at the same time controll- ing the degree of crystallinity in the plastic. The pres- ent invention overcomes this drawback by providing a meth- od for the production from thermoplastic material of mouldings whose partially crystalline condition can be controlled by physical effects, temperature effects, or both, comprising: forming a continuous extrusion; stabil- izing the extrusion by cooling at least one surface; ther- mal conditioning the stabilized extrusion to produce ther- mal deformability; and thermal deformation to produce form stable mouldings from the extrusion characterised in that in the production of mouldings from such plastics materi- al, whose crystalline state can be controlled from amor- phous to a specific degree of crystallinity, the desired crystallinity condition is produced in the moulding wall by a first thermal conditioning operation performed on the semifinished extrusion and by a second thermal condition- ing process performed on the moulding; the physical ef- fects to be performed in the course of the first thermal conditioning operation between stabilization and thermal forming are adapated and modified in predetermined manner to give a desired preparatory crystallinity and thermal deformabiltiy of the extrusion and a temperature gradient which is controlled through the cross-section of the ex- trusion, and leads to the desired final crystalline state in the plastic material of the moulding wall and is adapted to the ensuing thermal deformation process, and the second thermal conditioning process is carried out at least during the thermal deformation process with tempera- ture control to produce or maintain the desired final crystallinity state in the plastics material of the mould- ing wall in conjunction with obtaining form stability.
