1090-6 A METHOD FOR CONTROLLING THE DIAMETER OF TUBULAR FILMS MADE IN BLOW MOULDING PLANTS ABSTRACT A method for controlling the diameter of tubular films, which are manufactured in a blow moulding apparatus comprising an extruder with a film blowing head, an internal cooling means for the blown film, a calibrating means, a means for laying the film flat, and a means for film take-up. The exchanged amount of internal cooling air, the speed at which the extruder supplies plastic to the blowing head, the temperature of the extruded plastic material, the take-up speed, and the external cooling are automatically controlled in response to sensing means. To be able to carry out the control easily and without failure, without having to accurately measure the height of the frost line, the distance is measured from the tubular film in the vicinity of the inflection point of the blow-up region to at least one stationary sensor. A first control circuit responds to deviations of the distance from a predetermined setpoint, to increase or decrease the exchanged amount of internal cooling air, to restore the predetermined setpoint. The diameter of the tubular film is measured above the frost line, and a second control- circuit responds to deviations of the diameter from a predetermined setpoint to appropriately adjust any or all of the following variables: the temperature of the plastic material, the speed at which the extruder supplies plastic to the blowing head, or the take-up speed of the film, to maintain the diameter setpoint.
