Abstract of the Disclosure A method for controlling the flux feed rate in the operation of a flash smelting furnace wherein determination is carried out intermittently for changing the correcting value of the flux feed rate with reference to the preceding connecting value, comprising assaying gravimetrically samples of the matte and slag co-produced to determine the Cu-grade in the matte in the case for producing copper matte or the Ni-grade in the same in the case for producing nickel matte and the Fe/SiO2 ratio in the slag; calculating differences between the actual and desired values for Cu- or Ni-grade in the matte and of Fe/SiO2 in the slag, a first correcting ratio required for correcting the flux feed rate to be charged together with Cu- or Ni-bearing feeds for producing the desired qualities of matte and slag do as to maintain the Fe/Si02 ratio in the slag at the desired value when said first difference of Cu- or Ni-grade falls within a first predetermined allowable range but the second difference of Fe/SiO2 ratio exceeds a second predetermined allowable range or when the second difference exceeds said second pre- determined allowable range after recalculating of the products in accordance with the feeds at that time so as to maintain the Cu- or Ni-grade in the matte at the desired value in the case where the first difference of the Cu- or Ni-grade exceeds said first predetermined allowable range and then a first com- of a second correcting ratio obtained by multiplying the first correcting ratio by a factor of less than unity with the cor- recting ratio obtained similarly in the preceding determination and a second sum of the first sum with the flux ratio which has been calculated in the preceding determination from the com- positions and amount of feeds so as to obtain the desired Cu- or Hi-grades in the matte, and feeding the flux in an amount calculated by employing the second sum as the flux feed ratio.
