ABSTRACT A method for controlling the composition of matte in the operation of a flash smelting furnace wherein Cu- or Ni-grade is estimated for the matte produced in the settler during the tappings from the settler to a converter at the preceding time and at present time by correcting the Cu- or Ni-grade obtained by assaying the matte tapped from the settler and charged into the converter at present time by means of the Cu- or Ni- to be charged into the converter at the preceding time, and when the difference between the estimated and desired Cu- or NI-grades in the matte or the difference between the assayed and deviated beyond a predetermined tapped at that time is deviated beyond a predetermined allowable range, a present air amount of less than the theoretical amount required for correcting the Cu- or Ni-grade for each percentage of said difference by said difference for the matte tapped at that time, adding said calculated new correcting air amount with the preceding corrected air amount calculated similarly in the preced- ing tapping and calculating the difference between an air amount obtained by adding said sum with the air amount proportional to the square of amount of blended feeds being charged at present time and the theoretical air amount required for reacting the blended feeds being - 1 - charged at that time and for combusting the fuel oil so as to maintain the Cu- or Ni-grade in the matte produced in the settler by using said blended feeds at the desired Cu- or Ni-grade or so as to provide the desired Cu- or Ni-grade in the tapped matte, and the blast air is fed in an amount of said difference to control the Cu- or Ni-grade in the matte produced in the settler or tapped from the setter. - 2 -
