ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for controlling the speed of a Pump Jack which is equipped with a reciprocating sucker rod and a variable speed drive unit. The method consists of the following steps. Secure to a sucker rod of a pump jack a sensor to monitor sucker rod loads. Secure to the pump jack a position sensor for determining pump jack position and velocity Control the variable speed drive unit of the pump jack with a microprocessor which is coupled to the sucker rod sensor means and the pump jack sensor. The microprocessor receives data from the sucker rod sensor as to sucker rod load and from the pump jack sensor as to pump jack position and velocity, analyzes the data received, and sends a signal to the variable speed drive unit to vary the speed at which the pump jack is driven.
