The present invention relates to a method for cooling HF and NaF containing gas from a pyrohydrolysis reactor for pyrohydrolysis of fluorine containing waste materials where the pyrohydrolysis is carried out at a temperature above 1000°C. After the outlet from the pyrohydrolysis reactor the gas is cooled by injecting into the gas a solid particulate material which is inert at the actual temperature in an amount sufficient to cool the gas to a temperature of maximum 1000°C, whereby NaF vapour contained in the gas condenses on the solid particles or in the gas phase nar the solid particles.
