ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of covering the sump of underground cavities, particularly of underground cavities leached in salt domes which serve to store gaseous or liquid non-aqueous substances. The method is characterised in that a highly viscous crude oil is used for the covering, which contains not more than 7% of hydrocarbons with up to 5 C atoms in the molecule and the specific gravity of which amounts to at most 1.2 g/cm3 at +20°C and that the height of the layer of crude oil above the brine sump amounts to at least 1 cm, preferably 20 to 50 cm. Preferably the viscosity of the crude oil amounts to 40 to 150 Pas, preferably 50 to 150 Pas, at +20°C and 0.2 to 1.2 Pas, preferably 0.3 to 1.0 Pas, at + 80°C. Preferably also, the water content of the crude oil amounts to a maximum of 0.3%.
