Systems and methods for providing a framework within which device drivers may run at a user-mode level. A platform (e.g., APIC) or bus (PCI bus) generic feature is used to take the CPU out of interrupt mode without having to wait for a user-level driver to clear the device interrupt. This allows writing the complete device driver in user space. The device driver still get notifications on interrupts but not at interrupt priority. The same scheme can be extended to shared interrupts, where multiple devices share a single interrupt line.

L'invention concerne des systèmes et des procédés permettant de fournir un cadre d'applications dans lequel les pilotes d'unités peuvent fonctionner à un niveau mode utilisateur. Un élément générique plate-forme (p. ex. APIC) ou bus (PCI bus) sert à sortir l'UC du mode interruption sans qu'il soit nécessaire d'attendre que le pilote de niveau-utilisateur lève l'interruption de l'unité. Ce procédé permet d'écrire l'intégralité du pilote d'unité dans l'espace utilisateur. Le pilote d'unité continue de recevoir des notifications concernant les interruptions au moment des interruptions, mais indépendamment de la priorité d'interruption. Ce même procédé peut être étendu aux interruptions partagées, lorsque des unités multiples partagent une ligne d'interruption commune.
