ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The invention is concerned with an improved method for depolluting fresh and sea water bodies from crude oil, petroleum products and their derivatives by spreading onto the water bodies compounds which contain phosphorus and slow-release nitrogen in a form which can be assimilated by aquatic micro- organisms capable of metabolizing hydrocarbons. The improvement comprises using as the phosphorus source a compound selected from the group consisting of phosphatides, both of synthetic origin and occurring in natural products, and phosphates, and using as the slow-release nitrogen source a compound selected formthe group consisting of hydantoins, amides, allophanates, polyamines, acylureas, esters of hydantoic and allantoic acids, and ureido-derivatives of aldehydes, the phosphorus and the nitrogen in these compounds being present in an amount sufficient to increase the natural biodegradation of the pollutants caused by the metabolism of hydrocarbons by the aquatic microorganisms, the ratio by weight of the nitrogen to the phosphorus in the compounds being greater than about 12 to 1.
