ABSTRACT There is provided a method for detecting a movement of a television signal which can detect a movement of a television camera when it operates panning or the like. The method comprising the steps of: dividing one picture plane into a plurality of blocks and obtaining an absolute value of a difference between continuous two frames for each of the blocks; integrating the absolute value of the difference for each of the blocks with respect to the one picture plane and detecting a table for a block matching; and linearly obtaining an extremal value from the maximum gradient in four upper, lower, left, and right directions from an origin of the block as a start point using the block matching table.
