The invention concerns a method for detecting single postal covers and postal covers stuck together in a mail sorting installation which consists in analyzing images (5) representing postal covers (6) viewed from the front by applying to each image a contour-extracting process (10) to identify the covers (6) whereof the contour has a substantially constant height as being single covers. In accordance with said method, the reliability of detection of single covers is improved, and the digital image used for analysis can be the digital image which is also used for an optical character recognition processing in the mail sorting installation.

Le procédé de détection de plis simples et de plis en prise multiple dans une installation de tri postal consiste à analyser des images (5) représentatives des plis postaux (6) vus de face en appliquant à chaque image un traitement d'extraction de contour (10) pour reconnaître les plis (6) dont le contour (10) a une hauteur sensiblement constante comme étant des plis simples. Selon ce procédé, la fiabilité de détection des plis simples est améliorée, et l'image numérique utilisée pour l'analyse peut être l'image numérique qui est également exploitée pour un traitement de reconnaissance optique de caractères dans l'installation de tri postal.
