In a method used to determine and track the true position and orientation of a magnetic-field sensor which changes within a three-dimensional magnetic-field space from the measured values of the magnetic-field sensor, in a preceding calibration mode the magnetic-field space is structured in a three-dimensional grid with equidistant grid points, and all the values measured by the magnetic- field sensor positioned with a constant orientation in all the grid points in sequence are stored as calibration positions and calibration orientations in a calibration table in association with the real positions of the grid points in the magnetic-field space. In order to arrive at a robust method that can provide accurate results suitable for image computation for visual simulators, even in very distorted or perturbed magnetic fields, a linearly interpolating transformation of the point of measurement in the real magnetic-field space is undertaken for the actual measured values from the magnetic-field sensor, which are made continuously, in each instance with calibration positions that are taken from the calibration table and which enclose a tetrahedron that encloses the point of measurement.
