A method for determining drilling bit condition during a drilling operation is disclosed. The method includes analyzing drilling fluid returning from a well to determine the hydrogen gas concentration of the fluid; observing fluctuations in the hydrogen gas concentration during a drilling operation; and, comparing the fluctuations to known hydrogen gas concentration fluctuations indicative of drilling conditions. The method provides an accurate, substantially real-time way of determining the condition of the drilling bit without changing the structure of the bit and without pulling the drilling bit up to the surface for visual inspection. The method also provides a way to determine if there exists non-lithological debris down hole and to measure the success of fishing operations to remove non-lithological junk. The method can be used without the modification of standard drilling techniques.
