METHOD FOR DETERMINING SOURCE AND RECEIVER STATICS IN MARINE SEISMIC EXPLORATION Abstract In a method for seismic exploration at a marine exploration site having an anomalous near surface low velocity layer 12 below the water bottom, a marine seismic detector cable 14 is deployed along a seismic exploration line for which seismic reflection signals traveling to said seismic detector cable 14 pass through the near surface low velocity layer 12. In addition, a marine seismic monitor 15 is deployed at a distance remote from the seismic detector cable 14 such that the first energy received at the monitor 15 is in the form of seismic refraction signals which have passed through the near surface low velocity layer 12. First seismic energy is then generated at an offset distance from the seismic detector cable 14 so as to produce a first seismic signal which travels downward into the earth, is refracted through the earth, and travels upward through the near surface low velocity layer 12 to intersect the seismic detector cable 14 in a generally orthogonal direction, whereby said first seismic signal, as received by the detector cable 14, includes a receiver statics component attributable to said near surface low velocity layer. The first seismic signal is then compared with recorded refraction data for non-low velocity layer areas to determine said receiver statics component. In addition, second seismic energy is generated so as to produce a second seismic signal which travels downward through the near surface low velocity layer 12 into the earth, is refracted through the earth, and is detected by the remote seismic monitor 15 whereby said second seismic signal, as detected by the remote monitor 15, includes a source statics component attributable to the layer 12. The source statics component is determined by comparing the second refracted signal with the reflected signal detected by the cable 14 in response to reflection of the second seismic energy from the earth.
