The invention concerns a method for determining the density of a gas consisting in: filling a chamber (12) capable of sustaining the pressure without noticeable deformation with a gas whereof the density is to be determined and providing an initial pressure Pi higher than normal atmospheric pressure, by pressurised supply means (20); allowing said gas to escape through purging means (30) provided with a sonic nozzle (40), and measuring the time .DELTA.t taken by the gas to pass, inside the chamber (12), from a first pressure P1 not higher than the initial pressure Pi, to a second pressure P2 lower than said initial pressure P1; computing the density of the gas being analysed using a general theoretical formula stored in a computer (60) memory and including said measured time .DELTA.t and the gas temperature T, and a constant k obtained by the calibrating computer calibration (60) on the basis of a reference gas whereof the density is known.

L'invention concerne un procédé pour déterminer la masse volumique normale d'un gaz. Pour cela, on remplit et on met à une pression initiale Pi supérieure à la pression atmosphérique normale, à l'aide de moyens (20) d'alimentation sous pression, une enceinte (12) pouvant résister à la pression sans déformation notable, avec un gaz dont on veut déterminer ou vérifier la masse volumique; on laisse s'échapper ledit gaz au travers de moyens de purge (30) munis d'une tuyère sonique (40), et on mesure le temps .DELTA.t mis par le gaz pour passer, à l'intérieur de l'enceinte (12), d'une première pression P1 inférieure ou égale à la pression initiale Pi, à une seconde pression P2 inférieure à cette première pression P1, on détermine par calcul la masse volumique ? du gaz étudié par l'intermédiaire d'une formule générale enseignée par la théorie stockée dans la mémoire d'un calculateur (60) et faisant intervenir ledit temps .DELTA.t mesuré, la température T du gaz, et une constante k établie par étalonnage du calculateur (60) à l'aide d'un gaz de référence dont on connaît la masse volumique.
