A hydrocarbon exploration method is disclosed for developing a model of at least one effective material property of a subsurface reservoir as a function of the composition and structure of the reservoir rock. In one embodiment, the method comprises: obtaining a 3D image (102) of a rock sample characteristic of a reservoir of interest (101); segmenting the 3D image into compositional classes (103) based on similarities in mineralogy, structure and spatial distribution; selecting a model (105) that relates an effective material property of interest to the volume fractions of each compositional class; and determining the parameters of the model (106). L'invention concerne un procédé d'exploration d'hydrocarbures permettant de mettre au point un modèle d'au moins une propriété réelle de matière d'un réservoir souterrain en fonction de la composition et de la structure de la roche réservoir. Dans un mode de réalisation, le procédé comporte les étapes consistant à: obtenir une image 3D (102) d'un échantillon de roche caractéristique d'un réservoir intéressant (101); segmenter l'image 3D en classes de composition (103) sur la base de similitudes du point de vue minéralogique, structural et de la distribution spatiale; sélectionner un modèle (105) qui fait correspondre une propriété de matière effective intéressante à des fractions de volume de chaque classe de composition; et déterminer les paramètres du modèle (106). Le modèle peut être utilisé pour évaluer le potentiel commercial du réservoir souterrain (107).
