A METHOD FOR DIALING TELEPHONE NUMBERS FROM A PERSONAL COMPUTER ABSTRACT This method allows for the automatic dialing of telephone calls through a personal computer graphical in- terface. The personal computer uses a telephone line in- terface to connect the personal computer to a telephone line. First, the user must select the telephone number that is to be dialed. Selection is accomplished through a graphical user interface on the personal computer. A number may be selected from a predefined list or entered in numerically or alphanumerically. After the number has been selected a message is displayed on the personal com- puter indicating the selected telephone number. Simulta- neously with the displaying of the message, a message is sent to the telephone line interface to dial the tele- phone number. The telephone line interface waits for an off-hook condition on the telephone line. Once an off- hook condition is sensed the telephone line interface waits for the presence of dial tone on the telephone line or a timer expiring before dialing the number. If the telephone line returns back to an on-hook condition, the dialing is aborted.
