A method for controllably dissolving a crystalline material consisting of several kinds of ions in a solution containing a solvent for the crystalline material. Before dissolution, said solution contains at least two kinds of ions of the crystalline material. The molar concentration of each kind of ion is greater than zero but lower than the molar concentration of each kind of ion which the solution would have when saturated, if it contained all the ions making up the crystalline material, under the temperature and pressure conditions of dissolution. Said method can be used for the chemical milling of piezoelectrical materials, particularly berlinite.
