A B S T R A C T The invention discloses a method of encrusting, pelletizing or granulating seed material in such a manner as to permit the exchange of gases and liquids, which comprises applying to the seed material a tri-laminar, finely-granular, reversibly swellable mineral composition, which composition is produced from vermiculite or hydro-mica as starting materials, and which composition expands upon addition of liquid, and rapidly absorbs and releases polar liquids such as water, and which composition is comprised of at least 50% of laminar particles which are in the form of extremely thin, uniformly flat, plate-shaped particles of between 0.5 and 10 microns in thickness and having surface dimensions corresponding to an equivalent diameter of between 10 and 200 microns and having a ratio between particle thickness and equiva- lent diameter at most equal to 1:10, the said particles displaying hydrophilic properties on their flat surfaces, and the said composition forming films with strong cohesive and adhesive forces upon drying, and the said composition hav- ing considerable plasticity when its water content is between 35% and 65% by weight, and the said composition being permeable to gases and liquids at a thickness of 5 mm or less. This method is of particular use in the encrusting, pelletizing or granulating of seed material used in agriculture, forestry, gardening and the raising of ornamental plants.
