A method for controlling a vehicle (10) including an internal combustion engine (12) having an idle speed includes controlling the idle speed based on system voltage, and increasing the idle speed when system voltage is low and the vehicle speed status indicates that the vehicle is stationary. In some embodiments, idle speed may ramp up with current demanded engine speed while the vehicle is moving.
