A method for estimating the remaining charge in a storage battery by determining the residual charge when discharging begins, adding together the amount of energy removed as the battery is used, and determining the amount of charge that cannot immediately be restored because the discharge rate is too high, charge that can be restored by disconnecting a load from the battery, and charge that cannot be restored because of the prevailing temperature.
