METHOD FOR EVALUATING ELECTRODE COMSUMPTION RATE ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A method for determining the expected consumption rate of graphite electrodes is disclosed. An electrical signal is applied to a number of electrodes to generate eddy currents therein which are sensed to provide eddy current values. The consumption rate of the electrodes in use in an electric arc metallurgical furnace are measured. A standard eddy current value (with respect to the measured consumption rates) is determined, for example, by plotting the eddy current values and measured consumption rates. Thereafter, eddy current values obtained from other electrodes are compared with the standard eddy current value to determine the expected consumption rate.
