METHOD FOR EXTENDING THE LIFE OF WELDING ELECTRODES AND ELECTRODE GUIDES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for extending the life of welding electrodes and electrode guides includes shot peening the workpiece contacting surface of the electrode and the entry and exit orifices of the guides with sub- stantially spherical shot peening media, such as steel shot, glass beads, ceramic media and conditioned cut steel wire shot. Maximum life extension is achieved by optimizing the parameters of the peening process including the Almen intensity and the shot size, hardness and uniformity. Electrode and electrode guides shot peened in accordance with the present method display manyfold increases in life.
