A pattern matching preprocessing system which comprises: a) means for effecting a frequency domain transform on an input signal; b) means for producing a spectral plot from the output of a); c) means for effecting a spectral reconfiguration permutation and mapping (SRP & M) on the spectral plot as hereinbefore defined; d) means for effecting an inverse frequency domain transform on the output of c); and e) means for applying a Wave Shape Descriptor coding and classification to the output of d).
