14 ABSTRACT Friction layer powder is placed in an intermediate mold of which the inner contour matches the inner contour of a press mold. The powder is compressed in the intermediate mold. If necessary, intermediate layer powder is thereafter placed in the intermediate mold and likewise compressed. The intermediate mold is then brought to the press and set on the press mold, so that the inner contours are in registry. This is done while the press die of the press is in an uppermost position. Then the press die and an ejection die, the latter adapted to press downwardly from above on the powder in the intermediate mold, are lowered until the entirety of the powder in the intermediate mold is transferred to the press mold. The intermediate mold can incorporate a closable bottom, or may consist of two pieces lying one above the other, the pieces having the same inner contour. Also described is a press for carrying out the method.
