The present invention relates to a method for filling particulate material into vertical tubes. The particles are conveyed down into the tube along a line with a series of damper means arranged substantially transversely to the line and having a radial extension less than the tube's inner diameter. The line is pulled up gradually as the tube is filled with particles. The damper means can be in the form of brushes so flexible that they give gradually when the particles fall down on them. A wire can be used as the line, to which is fastened a series of substantially equidistant transversely extending brushes, preferably consisting of springs.
