A method for capturing an embolus within a vessel of a patient's body includes the steps of providing a device having at least one helix made of a mesh material. The at least one helix has a plurality of turns helically arranged around a longitudinal axis. The mesh material has a plurality of pores therein wherein the pores have a size 120 >=µn. The device is placed within the vessel of the patient's body by moving the device from a collapsed state to an expanded state.
