Abstract of the Disclosure Method and apparatus for forming a heat treating atmosphere in which a nitrogen rich gas is produced from air through a membrane separation system or a pressure swing adsorption system. The nitrogen rich gas is reacted with a hydrocarbon gas in the presence of a non-noble metal catalyst, preferably in a modified reactor, to produce a high nitrogen content heat treating atmosphere containing reduced amounts of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
