A method for forming a surface (13, 15) on a continuous casting mold (10). A surface (13, 15) of a continuous casting mold (10) is formed by explosion cladding to produce a wear resistant surface having high bond strength. The surface (13 15) may consist of a hot face of a broad (12, 14) or narrow wall (16, 18) of the continuous casting mold (10) or may comprise the edges (24) of the end walls (16, 18). Deformation of the mold section (1) is prevented by filling the coolant cavities (22) with a filler prior to explosion cladding.
