A poly(ethylene oxide) polymer having low and high molecular weight fractions is fractionated by dissolving the polymer in a solvent for the low molecular weight fraction. A good separation of the low and high molecular weight fractions can be obtained. When the poly(ethylene oxide) polymer contains a metal cyanide catalyst, this process also provides a good separation of the catalyst from the low molecular weight fraction. In this instance, the catalyst remains active and the high molecular weight fraction containing the catalyst can be recycled into subsequent polymerization processes.
L'invention concerne un polymère de poly(éthylène oxyde) possédant des fractions de masse moléculaire de faible poids et de poids élevé, et qui est fractionné par dissolution du polymère dans un solvant pour la fraction de masse moléculaire de faible poids. On peut obtenir une bonne séparation des fractions de masse moléculaire de poids élevé et de faible poids. Lorsque le polymère de poly(éthylène oxyde) contient un catalyseur de cyanure métallique, ce processus permet également une bonne séparation du catalyseur de la fraction de masse moléculaire de faible poids. Dans ce cas, le catalyseur reste actif et la fraction de masse moléculaire de poids élevé contenant le catalyseur peut être recyclée dans des processus ultérieurs de polymérisation.
