Abstract Method for generating an alarm indication signal (AIS) In centrally controlled standby power switching systems, the centres are only informed about a reception of AIS signals or the detection of defects in the digital signal by digital signal distributors but not by other link devices. Since the digital signal distributors cannot detect the point at which an AIS signal had been fed in, identical messages are given several times under certain circumstances without allowing the centre to detect whether there are one or more fault locations along the link. A modified AIS signal is introduced which consists of the familiar standardized AIS signal in the form of an all-ones signal and of an identification. These are either equidistantly inserted individual zeros with a frequency of less than 10-3 or is an additional signal. If a digital signal distributor (8) receives a standardized AIS signal or detects any other defect, it feeds a modified AIS signal into the outgoing link (15). The modification is only detected by the subsequent digital signal distributors (9, 10, 11, 12) which, in turn, again feed-in such a one and omit a message to a regional centre (3, 4). On the basis of the message of the digital signal distributor (8), the power system management centre 1 switches a standby link (16). The invention is applied in centrally controlled standby power switching systems. Figure
