-16- Abstract of the Disclosure A method is proposed which enables the formation of coarse, high density precipitates when treating solutions or slurries containing acids or metal salts. This is done by flocculating a slurried precipitant, such as hydrated lime, and adding such flocculated precipitant to the solution or slurry to be treated while agitating the same. During this reaction, the floccules of the flocculated precipitant become coated or encapsulated with precipitate which is broken under agitation to form the coarse particles of precipitate while uncovering the floccules of the precipitant to allow continuation of the reaction. Once formed, the coarse precipitate is allowed to settle and is subjected to a liquid/solid separation. Precipitate particles exceeding 35 mesh are commonly obtained.
