A method for handling threads (15) in spiralling or covering machines, in which double-cone bobbins (10) are used for the unwinding of the thread (15) in place of traditional bobbins (20) with flanges (22). Compared with the known art, the invention reduces the need for manual adjustment of the thread (15) on the bobbin (20), results in a gradual reduction of electricity consumption as the thread (15) unwinds, provides substantially balanced rotation of the entire spindle (30) supporting the bobbin (10), and results in an overall lesser manufacturing and operating cost of the spiralling machine.
