ABSTRACT A method for identifying a penetrable member such as a rail- road tie, utility pole, pallet, standing tree, or the like. A passive or active transponder is encoded with identification information and placed within an accommodating receptacle in a nail, screw, bolt or similar fastener. The fastener is inserted into the penetrable member by use of a nail gun, drill, hammer or other suitable device. Identification information stored in the transponder is read after insertion to identify the penetrable member. -16- :SE30:E3027201.92
