A method for uniquely identifying a file, along with its particular version ID, used in an application program by a central processing unit provides a system for file security. The method computes a CRC for a file and then appends a version string and CRC at the end of the file according to its version ID. The added CRC/version record information is non-destructive. Once appended, the record will be transported with the file when ever it is moved or copied. CRC allows the integrity of the file to be verified at any time and is used to detect viruses or corrupted or tampered files at startup and also during runtimes of the file and its associated application. The operating system will store the new file length in a file allocation table and will also copy a file seal with the file. When used with a set of files for a particular installation, the file seal provides a unique bill of a materials to identify the exact file contents of the particular installation. Down loadable files will then be compared with the allocation table to verify the version of the files and will provide error messages if they are not compatible with the installed system base.
L'invention porte sur un procédé d'identification univoque d'un fichier et du numéro d'identification de sa version utilisée dans un programme d'application par une unité centrale de traitement et constituant un système sécuritaire pour les fichiers. Le procédé calcule le code CRC d'un fichier, puis rattache à l'extrémité dudit fichier le CRC et une chaîne identifiant sa version. L'ensemble des informations CRC/version ainsi rattaché est non destructif. Une fois rattaché ledit ensemble suivra le fichier qu'il soit déplacé ou copié. Le code CRC permet de vérifier l'intégrité du fichier en tout temps et peut servir pour détecter les virus ou les fichiers altérés ou trafiqués, dès le départ, mais aussi pendant l'exécution du fichier et des applications associées. Le système d'exploitation enregistre la nouvelle longueur du fichier dans une table d'attribution de fichiers, et copie le sceau du fichier avec le fichier. Utilisé avec un ensemble de fichiers dans une installation particulière, le sceau de fichier est un moyen unique d'identification du contenu exact des fichiers d'une installation donnée. Les fichiers chargeable pourront alors être comparés à la table d'attribution pour vérifier la version du fichier et s'ils ne sont pas compatibles avec la base du système installé, fournir des messages d'erreur.
